We Don’t Know What We Don’t Know

By: Nick Niedzwiecki

How many opportunities have we missed out on in life simply because we made up our minds about something before we ever experienced it? We hear someone’s opinion, see something on social media, or make an assumption based on what we think we know. Before we realize it, we have convinced ourselves that something isn’t for us. The problem is that we are making decisions based on information we don’t actually have. We don’t know what we don’t know, and sometimes that lack of understanding is the very thing keeping us from something that could change our lives.

I see this happen all the time when it comes to CrossFit. People have an idea in their heads about what happens inside those gym walls. They picture people lifting ridiculous amounts of weight, doing complicated movements, and pushing themselves to the point of exhaustion. Somewhere along the way, they decided that they aren’t strong enough, young enough, or fit enough to participate. The interesting part is that many of these people have never actually walked into a CrossFit gym. Their entire opinion is based on something they heard or a video they watched.

What if I told you that the majority of people walking through our doors are just ordinary individuals trying to improve their lives? They’re parents, grandparents, business owners, teachers, and people who have spent years putting everyone else’s needs ahead of their own. Some haven’t exercised in decades. Others have never stepped foot inside a gym. They’re not showing up because they’re already in great shape. They’re showing up because they want to get there.

That’s the part people don’t see.

You don’t have to know how to lift weights. You don’t have to be able to run a mile or do a pull-up. You don’t even have to know where to begin. That’s our job. We meet you where you are, teach you what you need to know, and help you improve one day at a time. The person who hasn’t exercised in 20 years can walk through the same doors as someone who has been training for a decade, and both can get exactly what they need.

But none of that matters if you never give yourself the opportunity to find out.

Think about the things you’ve accomplished in life that once seemed intimidating. At some point, you had to put aside your doubts and take that first step. You didn’t have all the answers, and you certainly weren’t an expert when you started. You simply decided that the possibility of something better was worth being uncomfortable for a little while.

Your health shouldn’t be any different.

At CrossFit Athens, we’re not asking you to show up in shape. We’re asking you to show up willing to make a change. Leave the assumptions, the opinions, and the excuses at the door. Come see what actually happens inside our gym. Meet the people, talk to the coaches, and discover what you’re capable of.

You might find that everything you thought you knew was wrong.

And you might discover that the life you’ve been wanting was waiting on the other side of a door you were afraid to walk through.

The hardest part isn’t the workout. It’s deciding to walk through the door.
