Do you enjoy gardening, beautifying your community, or simply seeing the difference a little volunteer work can make? The Keep Athens-Limestone Beautification Committee is looking for community-minded volunteers who want to help make Athens and Limestone County even more beautiful—without the commitment of monthly meetings.
The Beautification Committee is a hands-on group that works on special projects throughout the community. Volunteers have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves, work alongside others, and see the results of their efforts firsthand.
One of our favorite projects is the seasonal planting of the flower pots throughout downtown Athens. Committee volunteers work alongside the Limestone County Career Technical Center Advanced Agriculture students to plant and maintain seasonal flowers. These students bring their knowledge, enthusiasm, and gardening skills to the project while volunteers provide an opportunity for community members to work alongside the next generation of agricultural and environmental leaders. Together, we help keep downtown Athens colorful and welcoming throughout the year.
The committee also takes on special beautification projects that enhance community spaces. One recent project has focused on the patio area at Athens-Limestone Tourism, where volunteers and students have helped create a more attractive and inviting outdoor space. Projects like this allow volunteers to contribute their ideas, talents, and time to improvements that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Another important responsibility of the Beautification Committee is recognizing businesses that make an extra effort to improve the appearance of our community. Through our Beautification Awards, we celebrate local businesses that demonstrate pride in their properties and contribute to a cleaner, more attractive Athens and Limestone County. Recognizing these efforts encourages others to take pride in their own businesses and neighborhoods.
Perhaps one of the best things about joining the Beautification Committee is the flexibility. There are no monthly meetings. Instead, volunteers participate when special projects are scheduled and when their time allows. Whether you have a green thumb, enjoy working outdoors, have creative ideas, or simply want to give back to your community, there is a place for you.
Because Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful is a nonprofit organization, volunteer service with the committee may also count toward required volunteer hours for other organizations and programs, including Master Gardeners, depending on their individual requirements.
You don’t have to be an expert gardener or have a lot of free time to make a difference. Sometimes, a few hours spent planting flowers, helping with a community project, or recognizing a deserving local business can have a lasting impact.
